Birkbeck University contacted SysGroup to discuss a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) pilot for the University Square Stratford project – a collaboration between Birkbeck and the University of East London. The University Square Stratford project required a shared IT infrastructure for up to 200 endpoints across both Universities. The IT management team was challenged to provide a fully-functioning desktop experience delivered from Bloomsbury, for Birkbeck students accessing the University Square Stratford campus IT systems.

SysGroup, a Liquidware Labs partner, offered the Stratusphere™ FIT tool; this is designed to provide comprehensive desktop and end user computing information, including detailed hardware, software, performance, resource utilisation and application usage metrics.

The FIT assessment is a key activity in SysGroup’s overarching VDI methodology, as it enables us to work with clients to identify use cases that are a ‘good fit’ for VDI. It allows us to capture key user metrics, including the user experience, which feeds into high-level design and budget costs.

Using the Stratusphere™ FIT software, Birkbeck gained:

  • a comprehensive understanding of their desktop estate
  • a baseline of user experience
  • detailed performance metrics
  • configuration data
IT Hardware Storage

The University could make confident and informed decisions about their virtualisation process after the consultation with SysGroup. Having a trusted partner to present different options and create the best custom IT solution made the entire process much simpler.

We were impressed with SysGroup’s experience in delivering VDI solutions in similar environments. They are definitely among those that have ‘been there, done that,’ and they responded most effectively to the tender document circulated.
