Investment into the Future
At SysGroup, developing the next generation of cybersecurity talent is central to our mission. Since 2020, our partnership with Edinburgh Napier University has provided a strong pathway for aspiring cybersecurity professionals through the BEng (Hons) Cybersecurity Graduate Apprenticeship programme.
Over the past five years, this collaboration has already delivered results we’re incredibly proud of. We now have four successful graduates, two apprentices still completing their degrees, and, as of August 2025, four new starters who have joined our team.
Building careers through apprenticeships
The Graduate Apprenticeship model allows students to earn while they learn, gaining a fully funded honours degree from Napier while working on real client projects at SysGroup. This hands-on approach equips apprentices with both academic knowledge and the practical skills they need to succeed in the fast-moving cybersecurity landscape.
Our journey began in 2020 with the first two apprentices, and each year since then we’ve strengthened our commitment to this programme. Apprentices split their time between study and work, applying their learning directly to the challenges faced by our clients.
Graduate success stories
The impact of this initiative is clear in the progression of our graduates:
- James Phillips has advanced to become our Cyber Security Team Lead.
- Ben Gordon is now a recognised as CyberArk SME.
- Eric Piejczew has established himself as a Zscaler SME.
- Ciaran Slater is due to graduate at the end of this month and is already making a strong contribution.
Their journeys demonstrate how the scheme not only builds technical expertise but also develops future leaders and specialists within our business.
Welcoming the new cohort
In August 2025, we welcomed four new apprentices onto the programme. Starting on our main IT service desk, they are building the foundational skills essential for a successful career in cyber. From the outset, they are enrolled as Graduate Apprentices with Napier, combining degree study with hands-on industry experience.
A partnership that benefits all
The apprenticeship programme brings clear value to both SysGroup and our apprentices:
- Apprentices earn a wage, gain invaluable workplace experience, and graduate debt-free with a respected cybersecurity degree.
- SysGroup benefits from fresh talent, energy, and innovation, with retention strengthened by the four-year course commitment.
- Our clients benefit from a team enriched with motivated professionals who are constantly learning and applying cutting-edge knowledge.
Looking ahead
SysGroup is committed to continuing this partnership year on year, growing our cyber team through the Graduate Apprenticeship model. As technology evolves and the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals grows, this programme will remain a cornerstone of our strategy to build and retain the very best talent.
